Community workshops and events are an important part of the General Plan Update process. Future workshops and events will be posted once the date, time, and location have been finalized. Materials for both future and past events can be found on this page. We encourage your attendance at the community workshops and events throughout the process!

The Council District 3 meeting occurred in-person at The Nueva School on Thursday, September 28. Doors opened at 5:30 pm and City Staff were available to answer questions about the Draft General Plan 2040, as well as other projects related to roadway safety, transportation improvements and stormwater protection. Council Member Rob Newsom Jr. was there to listen as well. The meetings included a presentation about the Draft General Plan 2040 with a follow up discussion. The presentation and discussion began at 7:00 pm and ended at 8:30 pm.
The Council District 4 meeting occurred in-person at the Bayside School Old Gym on Wednesday, September 20. Doors opened at 5:30 pm and City Staff were available to answer questions about the Draft General Plan 2040, as well as other projects related to roadway safety, transportation improvements and stormwater protection. Council Member Richard Hedges was there to listen as well. The meetings included a presentation about the Draft General Plan 2040 with a follow up discussion. The presentation and discussion began at 7:00 pm and ended at 8:30 pm.

The Council District 2 meeting occurred in-person at the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center on Wednesday, September 13. The General Plan team held a pop-up event at the North B Street Fiesta located at North B Street and Tilton Avenue.
The General Plan lays out the community’s vision for how our City will look, feel, and change over the next 20 years. Since 2018, we’ve been gathering community input that is the foundation of the Draft General Plan. Tell us how we did! How well does it reflect your ideas? What policies and actions should be a top priority for the City?
The City held a virtual workshop about the Draft General Plan 2040 that included time for questions and an optional follow-up discussion where attendees could share feedback. This meeting was conducted using Zoom, an online video/audio conferencing platform. Meeting participants were able to join by desktop, tablet, or smart phone with Internet connection.

The General Plan team hosted a booth at the Rediscover San Mateo Community Fest to spread the word about the General Plan Update.
The City of San Mateo is getting ready to release a draft ordinance for how to implement SB 9 here in San Mateo. SB 9 is a new state law that requires cities to ministerially approve two main housing units (i.e. duplexes) and certain subdivisions (i.e. urban lot splits) in single-family zoned areas. The draft ordinance was published and covers a variety of topics including number of units, design standards, and more. The City held a virtual community workshop to discuss the major components of a draft ordinance on August 8, 2022.

The General Plan team hosted a booth at the City’s Dia De Los Muertos event.
The Community Relations Commission held the first of many housing workshops for the purpose of learning about the community’s needs and concerns such as housing affordability, being able to live close to employment, housing for those with special needs, fair housing, displacement, and more. This workshop was held as a part of the regular Community Relations Commission meeting on September 29, 2021 online via Zoom.
